More Than a Game: Community Unites at Ntokozo Myeni U15 Tournament

The atmosphere was electric at the Newfield Sports Grounds, Ngwelezane today as young talent took center stage in the highly anticipated Ntokozo Myeni Under-15 Soccer Tournament. After a series of thrilling matchups, Bomvini FC rose to the occasion, clinching the championship title and etching their name into the tournament’s growing legacy.

But the day wasn’t just about goals and glory. It was a celebration of community, mentorship, and opportunity, all values deeply embedded in the tournament’s mission.

Among the most inspiring moments of the day was the presence of South African football royalty, Mike “Nanana Take Me Home” Ntombela, former Wits player and Mamelodi Sundowns captain, now an author of the powerful memoir When the Fans Stop Cheering. A legend both on and off the field, Ntombela attended not just to support, but to scout. For years, he has made it a tradition to select a Ngwelezane team from this tournament to travel to Gauteng and play against top development teams, including the Sundowns Academy, giving rural talent the rare chance to be seen on professional platforms.

Also joining the crowd was Sandile Mthethwa, former Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu FC defender, who mingled with spectators, sang with fans, and uplifted the spirit of local football with his humble presence.

Hosting this event in Ward 28, local councillor Siphelele “Wiwi” Gumede proudly stood with the initiative, emphasizing its power to change lives.

“Tournaments like these keep our children busy, disciplined, and hopeful. This is how we fight drugs and crime — by giving them something greater to aspire to,” Gumede said.

Support from the community and sponsors helped make this day a success. Old Mutual contributed soccer kits, jerseys, balls, and the tournament trophy, a symbolic gesture of their investment in youth empowerment. Orange Grove also lent their support, adding to the festive spirit with refreshments and a strong presence.

With Bomvini FC now champions and the spotlight shining on promising young players, the Ntokozo Myeni U15 Tournament continues to grow as a beacon of hope in Ngwelezane. Through sports, it is nurturing discipline, exposing talent, and uniting communities.
