Growing up without parents motivated him to do better

Mlungisi Nzuza (24) who is popular known for his annual event “July Invasion” have always believed in pushing boundaries and reaching for the skys since high school days. His current career as an event organiser, graphic and fashion designer was influenced by his choice of subjects at School, his favorite subject was Drama and Arts. At Grade 10 he started taking his drawing talent serious and his teachers advised him to consider turning his talent into a career.

Immediately after Khombindlela High School he went straight to the work place environment where he was hired as a junior graphic and fashion designer at a local print and embroidery shop at Ngwelezane Township. One of his best selling merchandise were T-Shirts that had the following writings “Mfana ka Mama / Mfana ka Baba” that he designed to commemorate the passing of his both parents who left him at a very young age. The merchandise was warmly received by the market, especially the youth that faced similar situation of losing parents, it also attracted those who still have parents and encouraged them to love and care for their parents.

With the fan base he created while selling his clothing merchandise he was able to confidently launch the annual event called “July Invasion”. Initially the event was created to commemorate his Birthday alongside with his friends who are born in June/July however he ended up running the show all by himself which led him to treat this event as a business.

Last year’s event was hosted at Mhlathuze Lodge and it was a resounding success with close to 500 people attending the event. Though there were technical glitches the event ended up happening and the youth attending had fun. The event attracted people from as far as EThekwini as he had a group of artists coming all the way from EThekwini to perform at the July Invasion.

This year he is planning to make it bigger and better, Soon Mlu will disclose the new venue for the “July Invasion 2024”. He is working hand in hand with Andiswa Mdunge of Diviine Creation, local social media influencers and promoters.
