From Hidden Guitars to TikTok Fame: The Rise of Skhumba STS

Skhumbuzo Dubazane, better known as Skhumba STS, is a proud Ulundi boy from Nhlungwane. Growing up in the rural heart of Zululand, he spent his days herding cattle and joining other boys in stick fighting, a tradition that connects young men to their roots. But behind those simple, carefree days, music was quietly calling him.

Skhumba’s journey began in the most humble way, he made guitars out of old tins and sang in secret. Shy and without support at home, he would hide his instruments in the bushes, only practicing alone. It was in high school that a meeting changed his path. Sabelo Da Musiq encouraged him to explore all kinds of music, from gospel to Afro-pop to Maskandi and helped shape him into the skilled backup singer he is today.

With determination and resourcefulness, Skhumba used the R450 his parents gave him for his learner’s license to buy a proper guitar. Nights became his studio; he would watch videos of legendary Maskandi guitarist Mgqumeni and mimic every move until he could play like a pro. Early in his career, demos sent over WhatsApp were often ignored or met with skepticism, even by his own family. But nothing could stop him.

A move to Johannesburg brought him under the guidance of Baba Masinga, who gave him a bigger guitar and let him learn by observation. “I won’t teach you,” Baba Masinga told him, “just watch me and do as I do.” That lesson in patience and self-discipline stayed with Skhumba forever.

2022 marked a turning point with the release of his album “Ulibhiimbi Mfana.” The title, which means “You are a bad singer,” raised eyebrows, but Skhumba had a bigger plan—to inspire young artists to focus on their craft and not speak ill of others. Controversy continued to follow him, with albums like “Angincenge Kubhula” and “Bhuti Wenqantiza” drawing attention and opening doors. A viral TikTok clip from one of his songs racked up 500,000 views and even caught the attention of Ukhozi FM’s Zim Dollar, helping him reach the right audience.

Money wasn’t the initial motivator. Skhumba recalls the first R800 he earned playing guitar, which he gave to his mother. That gesture finally earned her blessing, and she realized that her son’s passion could sustain him and even the family.

Over the years, Skhumba has worked closely with Lindani Khali of Okagaba Development, who often helped him get gigs and sometimes even offered transport. He has shared the stage with Maskandi legends like Thokozani Somnandi Langa a childhood idol describing the moment as a dream come true. He also worked with STABILITY, collaborations that he treasures deeply. Today, he is a regular backup singer for Baba Somnandi, a testament to his dedication and talent.

Skhumba has performed at some of Maskandi’s biggest stages, including Somnandi Festival, Mother of All Maskandi, Mpucuzeko, Ingezo Yamabhinca, Upongolo Extravaganza, and Umgangela, each show cementing his reputation as one of the rising stars in the genre.

In 2025, he dropped his latest album, “Is It True,” packed with hit songs that showcase his versatility and growth as an artist. TikTok fame and brand endorsements are now following him, proving that persistence, passion, and talent can truly pay off.

Reflecting on his journey, Skhumba says, “People who are your blood don’t see your vision until someone from outside embraces it. The journey is not easy, trust the process and give it time.”

From hiding in bushes with a handmade guitar to becoming a viral sensation, Skhumba STS’s story is one of resilience, creativity, and the unstoppable spirit of Maskandi music.
