Uthungulu Community Foundation Reflects on 26 Years of Community Growth at 2025 AGM

The Uthungulu Community Foundation (UCF) hosted its Annual General Meeting on Thursday, 27 November 2025, at Premier Hotel Richards Bay, marking 26 years of community impact and development support across the region. The gathering brought together donors, trustees, partner organisations and grantees, including Green Chapter Foundation, which shared a testimony on how UCF’s funding has strengthened its environmental and community projects.

In his welcoming remarks, CEO Simphiwe Mbatha reflected on the significance of the foundation’s longevity. He explained that although many nonprofit organisations are often assumed to have short life spans, UCF has endured because it has remained purpose-driven. He reminded attendees that NPOs were historically viewed merely as tax-diversion instruments for corporates, yet UCF has consistently demonstrated meaningful impact that goes far beyond compliance or survival.

“You are not beneficiaries,” he said. “You are fulfilling purpose.”
He commended NGOs present, noting that they continue to serve communities with dedication and sincerity rather than serving themselves.

Chairperson Vusi Mdletshe reflected on the foundation’s progress and the work still ahead. He stressed the importance of strengthening internal structures, ensuring that sub-committees meet consistently, and upholding good governance in honour of trustees, donors and the communities served. He also highlighted UCF’s intention to support more peer organisations while expanding its footprint as a pioneer in improving quality of life and driving development initiatives in the region.

During the meeting, the Chairperson highlighted several projects supported by UCF in the past year. These include the Rainbow Circle sewing initiative, an income-generating project supporting local families; the greening and tree-planting project implemented by Green Chapter Foundation; and support extended to local schools to enhance learning environments.

A key highlight was the introduction of the ZALWA Ufumbethe Technology Park, UCF’s flagship programme designed to address digital inequality. The centre will provide essential services such as CV writing support, basic digital literacy and soft skills training, particularly targeting youth who struggle to find employment despite high numbers of matriculants and graduates in the district.

Mr Mdletshe emphasised the need to strengthen social enterprise projects and ensure sustainability within the foundation’s future programmes. He closed his remarks by expressing gratitude to the leadership team, noting that “no foundation can function on auto-pilot.” He thanked CEO Simphiwe Mbatha for his vision and leadership, and acknowledged the financial team led by Mbali Zulu for their diligence and smooth engagement with auditors.

The AGM served as a moment of reflection, appreciation and renewed commitment for all stakeholders present. For organisations like Green Chapter Foundation, it was also an opportunity to recognise the role UCF plays in turning community ideas into action — and grassroots passion into real, measurable impact. As UCF celebrates 26 years, the message was clear: purpose keeps organisations alive, and partnerships keep communities moving forward.
