The spirit of creativity and community upliftment was in full bloom this past Saturday as the Mfolozi Local Municipality hosted a vibrant Talent Discovery Showcase at the municipal hall. The event, supported by the KZN Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, offered a powerful platform for local artists to unveil their hidden gems and celebrate diverse artistic expressions.
Drawn from all 18 municipal wards, the participants had earlier competed in auditions, with the best advancing to this major event. Categories included music, dance, poetry, drama, and visual arts, each act met with roaring applause from a packed venue filled with eager supporters.
“It was heartwarming to witness so much raw, authentic talent from our communities,” said Mayor Xolani Bhengu, who addressed the crowd with deep appreciation. “We thank the Department for bringing this opportunity to our people, starting right where talent lives, in the wards.”
Mayor Bhengu commended all participants, reminding them that simply stepping onto the stage made them winners. “Yes, some have progressed to the next level at district, but every one of you showcased courage and skill. That alone is victory.”
The highlight of the event was a moving poetry performance by a young poet from the Buthelezi clan, who clinched top spot in the poetry category with a soul-stirring piece titled “Ngilahlekelwe” (I Have Suffered a Loss). “This is more than just a win,” she said. “It’s a moment to share my story, my voice. I’m grateful for this platform.”
Beyond performances, local crafters displayed their handmade creations, turning the venue into a hub of artistry and cultural pride. Importantly, all participating artists will now be added to the municipality’s official arts database, ensuring future access to opportunities, events, and funding.
“This is just the beginning,” concluded Mayor Bhengu. “We are committed to nurturing every form of talent that lives within Mfolozi. Together, we are building a future where creativity drives opportunity.”
