Siyaqhubeka Forests recently hosted its inaugural sports tournament for schools around Kwa Mbonambi under uMfolozi Local Municipality, an event that went beyond just competition, it became a powerful tool for uniting communities and fostering positive change.
The tournament featured spirited matches including
Soccer
1st place: Manqamu High School
2nd place: Ntongande Secondary School
3rd place: Mkhayideni High School
Netball
1st place: Ntongande Secondary School
2nd place: Mkhayideni High School
3rd place: Sphumelele High School
Matches such as Sphumelele vs Ntongande and Manqamu vs Mkhayideni were keenly contested, with a point system keeping the tournament competitive and exciting.
This tournament was more than just games. In recent months, tensions and conflicts had erupted between some schools, including a notable dispute between Mkhayideni and Ntongande High Schools. But on the field, rivalries were replaced by comradeship a testament to sport’s unique power to unite.
“Youths who previously clashed over drugs and territorial issues found common ground on the pitch,” said a Siyaqhubeka Forests spokesperson. “This initiative promotes not only physical activity but also social cohesion and academic excellence.”
Indeed, while some students may struggle academically, sports give them an alternative focus. Yet, to participate, students are encouraged to maintain good academic standing, blending athletic and educational success.
Many of the players in the tournament are already competing in the ABC Mostepe League, a stepping stone to professional sport. Siyaqhubeka Forests is also committed to supporting talented individuals by providing opportunities for trials and career advancement beyond the tournament.
A standout is Ayanda Mncube, the netball captain of Ntongande Secondary School and a Grade 10 student from Eshobeni Ward 2 under Umfolozi Municipality. Inspired by RBM, she dreams of a career in mining while leading her team to victory.
The tournament embodies Siyaqhubeka Forests’ broader Corporate Social Investment (CSI) mission, using sport as a tool to unite schools, uplift youth, and build stronger communities.
With this successful inaugural event, Siyaqhubeka Forests plans to make the tournament an annual tradition, nurturing not just athletes, but future leaders and changemakers in Kwa Mbonambi.
