The recent Access to Market, Funding, Finance, Brand Marketing & Sales Workshop, hosted by KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) in partnership with the City of uMhlathuze, brought together entrepreneurs, experts, and support institutions under one roof to empower local businesses with vital tools for growth and sustainability.
One of the key highlights of the workshop was a compelling presentation by Mr. Matome Kgomommu, Export Promotion Manager at Trade and Investment KZN. He urged local entrepreneurs to explore not only European markets but to also recognize the untapped potential in neighboring countries like Botswana, Lesotho, and Eswatini.
“These markets share similar tastes with South Africa, and the existing trade relationships within SADC including zero tariffs create a favorable environment for exports,” said Mr. Kgomommu. He also emphasized the growing importance of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) in enabling smoother intra-African trade.
Buyi Langa, a productivity practitioner from Productivity SA, shared practical tips on how SMMEs can better manage their time and resources to improve efficiency and competitiveness. Her talk focused on maximizing impact with limited inputs something many small businesses struggle with.
Entrepreneur and media specialist Mr. Mqobi Mthethwa of Magaga Media and Communications offered valuable advice on business etiquette, the art of the elevator pitch, and the importance of maintaining a strong online presence. “Always be ready to pitch your business. You never know when your next opportunity will appear,” he reminded attendees.
A key moment of inspiration came from the Ziphakamise Co-operative Bank, a CFI (Co-operative Financial Institution) that has grown significantly over the years. A representative explained how CFIs work and the benefits they offer to township and rural entrepreneurs, such as easy access to savings and credit.
Mr. Hadebe, one of the founding members of Ziphakamise and a former Bell Equipment employee, gave a heartwarming account of the bank’s humble beginnings in 1998. Today, Ziphakamise is recognized at the highest levels receiving an award from the President for being the best-performing CFI in the country.
Another highlight was a presentation by SEDFA’s programme, which offers comprehensive support to SMMEs looking to exhibit their products and services at trade shows and expos. Their support package includes accommodation, transport, promotional material, and meals a crucial enabler for small businesses with limited resources.
Sedfa also assists with business plans, training, and even funds purchase orders. For businesses with a clear vision and growth plan, they offer grant opportunities that can be game-changers for scale and visibility.
This workshop was more than a talk shop it was a call to action. Entrepreneurs walked away with fresh insights, renewed motivation, and access to real opportunities. The collaboration between KZN EDTEA, City of uMhlathuze, and various support partners demonstrates a strong commitment to unlocking township and rural economic potential.
As local entrepreneurs begin to implement what they learned, it’s clear: the tools for transformation are within reach what’s needed now is action, consistency, and collaboration.
