Deputy Minister Nomalungelo Gina Awarded Honorary Doctorate by UNIZULU

Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Nomalungelo Gina, has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Zululand (UNIZULU) in KwaZulu-Natal.

The university conferred the degree in recognition of her contributions to public service, education, and inclusive innovation, according to the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI).

Gina received the honor alongside over 3,000 graduates at the KwaDlangezwa Campus in Empangeni, where degrees, diplomas, and certificates were awarded to the university’s 2025 cohort.

Professor David Mabunda, chairperson of the UNIZULU Council, described the conferment as both valid and timely.

“We truly celebrate your lifelong commitment to education, economic development, and the empowerment of women and workers,” said Mabunda. “Your work in government and beyond reflects a deep love for our people and a steadfast determination to uplift them. You remind us that leadership is not about power, but about purpose.”

UNIZULU vice-chancellor and principal, Professor Xoliswa Mtose, also praised Gina for her impactful contributions in both the education and government sectors.

Describing the honor as a personal and professional milestone, Gina said: “This conferment has deeply humbled me. It marks a significant moment in my life, not only as a public servant but also as a woman, a daughter, and a proud product of a rural upbringing.”

In her remarks, Gina advocated for the inclusion of rural and township communities in science, technology, and innovation (STI) policies and programme implementation.

“Innovation must not be the preserve of the elite,” she said. “We need to step out of our offices in Pretoria and support grassroots innovators in rural and township areas.”

She also emphasized the importance of education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), highlighting the growing impact of artificial intelligence (AI). She urged the graduating class to embrace technology and adapt their skills to meet the evolving demands of the modern economy.

“Artificial intelligence is real, it is already transforming careers in law, commerce, and administration. But human input will always be essential. Learn it, master it, and use it to your advantage.”

UNIZULU has enjoyed a longstanding relationship with the DSTI. Recently, Gina met with the university’s deputy vice-chancellor for research and innovation to explore a partnership aimed at boosting regional research and innovation.

One of the initiatives under consideration is the establishment of KwaZulu-Natal’s first optical telescope and astronomical observatory.

“Until we make a lasting impact on the lives of ordinary South Africans, especially those in rural and township communities, we cannot claim to have truly overcome the legacy of economic and social exclusion,” Gina concluded.
