Khombindlela Secondary Breaks Boundaries with Hands-On Career Exploration for Grade 8 Learners

Who would have thought a township-based high school could be at the forefront of redefining education for the African child? Yet that’s exactly what’s happening at Khombindlela Secondary School, where Grade 8 learners spent their day immersed in hands-on career exploration that could shape their futures forever.

From construction, electrical engineering, and carpentry, to hospitality, IT/computer literacy, agriculture, and even painting, the learners rotated through practical stations guided by professionals from each industry. These were not ordinary lessons — they were real-world simulations of the careers learners dream about.

According to Sir Nsele, the school’s passionate educator and programme coordinator, this is just the beginning.

“This exploration phase continues up until Grade 10,” he said. “By then, students would have chosen a specific stream of study, and their practicals will become more focused. The aim is to equip them with life skills and expose them to the demands of real-world work life early on.”

One of the standout facilitators on the day was Nolwazy Agric Farming, who led the agriculture practicals. A familiar face at Khombindlela, she regularly visits to enrich the learners with knowledge gained from her organic farming training at Siyasisiza Trust, Mthunzini Farm. Her passion for sustainable food systems and empowering young people through agriculture was palpable.

The programme would not be what it is without strong community support. Sir Nsele extended heartfelt thanks to the parents who contributed materials to make the practicals possible.

“Our parents are true partners in education. Their contributions show they understand the power of what we’re trying to do for their children,” he said.

This initiative is not just about career guidance it’s about changing the narrative for learners in township and rural communities. In a world where practical skills and early exposure to career paths are often reserved for privileged schools, Khombindlela Secondary is proving that excellence can emerge anywhere when the community, school, and industry partners unite.
