Noxolo Mathula have recently been on our screens on UZALO as Lily, which is aired every Monday to Friday on SABC 1. We asked her few questions to get to know her a little bit better since we are going to be seeing a lot from her soon.
When did you discover your love for arts?
My love for acting started when I was 7 years old, as I did many plays at Junior Primary school and the more I did them the more I fell in love with this craft.
Which got the opportunity to be exposed first between music, dance and acting?
My acting was the first craft that got exposed as I didn’t know I could sing until my late Director told me I can ,after being a backup singer for some time. The dancing then came later when one was already exploring the Arts as a whole.
Going to the arts school, how was your experience in that institute?
Film School!!! What a wow. I think I enjoyed seeing people that were so similar to me and my type of character. I mean coming from Kwa-Mashu you not really exposed to the great part of the arts as most parents think being a performer is a hobby. So for me it was a great experience and I looked forward to everyday of Acting and exploring someone else’s life. It was great, made great friends and great networks.
In most African families they do not take arts as a career, did you come across similar challenges or did they welcome your choice?
I was very fortunate to come from a family that believes in your choices and believes in your talent. It was never a challenge but they just wanted me to have a plan, which I believe I did at that time. I remember sitting my uncle down and telling after Matric that I’m taking a gap year to explore my acting.
Who have you worked with?
In theatre (my first love) I worked with the great Xolani Dlongolo,Roel twijnstra, Emma Durden to name just a few people that have groomed my talent and have assisted in making one a brand more than just an actor. The theatre productions that were put together by these people were magical! The late Sthembiso Zwane(2Cent) was the first person to recognise my talent who we worked very close wit.
When it comes to Television I worked with the likes of David Kau where I got my debut in TV on a show called “ABASEBENZI” which was on Mzansi Magic. The list is still going to be a lot as this is just the beginning. On Uzalo I worked with great directors like Luthando Mngomezulu,Sabelo Ndlovu,Tebogo Mkhabela, Tiny Mungwe which has been a great honour, since these are young directors who are goal driven and are always pushing one above the limit
Now let talk about UZALO. I won’t ask you anything haaha just tell me everything you think we need to know about your experience in UZALO including what you learnt.
The Uzalo journey has been magical. I started off on Uzalo in 2014 when I was an extra at the Shisanyama then a waitress which had a few lines. The journey went on to being a Production Assistant in 2017, then now being Lilly in 2018! It’s been a great journey and that’s all I can say for now.
You started your year with the bang, so tell me what is your plan for the rest of 2018?
Plans for 2018 are just building this brand called Noxolo Mathula. Looking into getting into radio because radio presenting has also been close to the heart.
Thank you for the love and support and stay tuned for this is just the beginning!!!
